The Challenge

What the Client Needed

The owners of a magnificent Edwardian Hampstead residence wanted a panelled study and library that was architecturally appropriate to the period of the house, whilst providing practical, concealed storage for an extensive book and artefact collection. Every dimension was nonstandard: the room had no right angles, demanding bespoke design from the first drawing.

The Solution

How Crown Building Delivered

Crown Bespoke's design team surveyed the room in full and produced a complete set of shop drawings before a single piece of timber was cut. We specified solid English oak throughout, sustainably sourced and air dried, with traditional hand cut mortise and tenon joinery, polished brass library rails, and concealed LED strip lighting within the upper cornice. The bookcase fits the room to within 1mm across 8 linear metres.

Why a Room With No Right Angles Changes Everything

In a period Hampstead property, almost nothing is square. Walls bow, floors fall, and ceiling heights vary across a single room: the accumulated movement of a century. Standard cabinetry cannot absorb that: fitted against an out of true wall, it either leaves tapering gaps or must be scribed so heavily that the proportions are lost.

The answer is to survey the room completely before design begins and produce shop drawings that reflect the room as it actually is, not as a plan says it should be. Every panel, stile and rail is then dimensioned to its own position. This is the difference between joinery that looks bespoke and joinery that is bespoke, and it is why the drawing stage takes longer than clients expect and the installation takes less.

Solid English oak was specified throughout, sustainably sourced. Solid timber moves with humidity, which is a feature rather than a fault, but it must be detailed to accommodate that movement. Panels floating within frames, allowances at abutments, and acclimatisation on site before installation.

Delivery

Integrating Storage Without Losing the Room

A library serving an extensive book and artefact collection has to solve two competing problems: open display for the pieces that deserve it, and concealed storage for everything else. Resolving that within period proportions means the concealed elements must read as architecture, panelling, pilasters and cornice returns, rather than as cupboards applied to a wall.

Services complicate this further. Lighting for display, power for devices and any AV provision must be planned into the joinery before manufacture, because retrofitting a cable route through a finished solid oak panel is not a repair, it is a replacement.
